1. What legislation are you most proud of and why?
I am proud of Senate Bill 1365 (S1365) which is a bill I worked on with local coroners that directs the Department of Motor Vehicles to add next of kin to the driver’s license database. This would be a voluntary option that will help coroners and other law enforcement locate the next of kin after a death or other emergency. As our world is changing, it is getting more difficult to locate people. Some coroners have reported it has taken several days to find relatives of deceased people. This is a good bill; I appreciate the help of the coroners to get it through the legislative process.
2. What legislation are you most disappointed that failed to pass this session and why?
One disappointment I had was Senate Bill 1416 (S1416), a bill that I helped write, sponsor and carry which passed the Senate but failed to get a hearing in the House. This bill was a step in the process to help our EMS personnel and districts throughout the state that are underfunded and often understaffed. These districts are dealing with burnout and problems with retaining and recruiting volunteers. S1416 had intent language that would make EMS an essential service in the state of Idaho, where currently it is not.
3. What will you be working on in the interim for the session next year?
I will be working on planning a successful pathway for passage of a new version of S1416, the EMS bill. This is an important issue to me and our EMS throughout the state. Our EMS are always at the scene of an emergency, doing what they do best, saving lives. We appreciate these volunteers and the work they do.
