1. What legislation are you most proud of passing this session and why?
After last year’s bill that added work requirements for food stamps, I wanted to continue helping people back to work. I brought H686 that I call the “ghosting” bill. The bill adds a portal where businesses can report individuals that are not showing up to job interviews, otherwise known as ghosting. If the individual is receiving unemployment benefits and is found to be ghosting businesses, then that individual will lose their unemployment benefits for that week. I hope this will be an asset to businesses struggling to find workers and help individuals get off unemployment and get back on their feet.
2. What legislation are you most disappointed that failed to pass this session and why?
A bill that I thought would do a lot of good for Idaho, that failed on the House floor, was H602. Referred to as the, “no taxpayer funds for unions bill”. In Idaho, there are 52 school districts that are using state funded payroll technology systems to automatically deduct the union dues from the teachers’ paychecks. There are 51 teachers’ contracts that include paid time off for teacher union activities. If teachers want to unionize, that is the teachers’ choice, but taxpayers should not be obligated to pay for a program that is not operated by the State.
3. What will you be working on in the interim for the session next year?
The issue that is at the forefront of my mind is making sure Representative Wendy Horman, in District 32, is re-elected so she can continue her good work in the Appropriations Committee. The Appropriations Committee, or JFAC, sets the budget for the entire state. She and her co-chair, Senator Scott Grow, have worked tirelessly to add transparency and clarity to the budgeting process that without them next session, all progress would be lost. They have been met with serious opposition from the left that shows just how important their work is to Idaho. We need her back!
