MONTPELIER — Seven years ago, the Mandarin Cafe closed its doors in Montpelier after nearly two decades of success when owners Jay and Mandy Wu retired to California.
Then, just eight months ago, Wu House Authentic Chinese Cuisine opened its doors in the same location at 253 S. 4th St. and business has been booming.
Wu’s son Jeffery and his friend Peyton Johnson wanted to re-open the business, but with a few changes.
Jeffery brought the family recipes and Johnson brought his expertise as a manager of a Panda Express in Logan, Utah, and with the help from family and friends, Wu House became a reality.
“We are using the same building and recipes from the old Mandarin Cafe,” explained co-owner Mandy Johnson. “We offer unique, authentic, made-from-scratch Chinese entrees as quick as regular fast-food places, and we also offer a great variety of Boba drinks.”
Mandy added that they have big plans for the future, starting with a food truck in Garden City, Utah.
“We are relatively new, but we continue to expand our menu with new options,” she explained. “Our newest addition is Bear Lake Raspberry Chicken. We feel it’s the best thing to happen to raspberries since the raspberry shake was invented.”
The food takes hours to prepare from scratch, and Wu House puts value in offering great food in large portions at a reasonable price.
“We are community oriented and love supporting our local youth and organizations,” Mandy said. “We also offer catering services.”
Wu House's menu offers a variety of dishes, including American and Chinese cuisine, chicken, desserts, noodles, salads, seafood and vegetarian entrees.
Hours vary per season, but people can stay updated via Wu House's website and social media pages. Online ordering can be done via the restaurant's website, Wuhouseid.com, or by calling 208-775-0800.
